POMCO Group Presenting Sponsor of Jazz in the City for 5th Year

7/21/2011

POMCO Group, one of the nation's largest professional benefits administrators, has announced its fifth year as presenting sponsor of Jazz in the City. The concert series is the only event in Syracuse that brings jazz and R&B music to each corner of the city featuring local talent, students, and national musicians. Jazz in the City will kick off on August 4th at 7:00 p.m. with its first concert at Dunk and Bright in Syracuse. The remaining concerts will be held on August 11th, August 18th and August 24th. POMCO Group's support was announced during a press conference which officially launched the start of Jazz in the City's tenth year. To view POMCO Group President and CEO Robert W. Pomfrey's speech during the press conference please click here.

Now in its tenth year of programming, the series is celebrating its fifth anniversary with POMCO Group as its presenting sponsor. "Jazz in the City has become one of our key sponsorships for a variety of reasons, however, the ability to bring our community together through a common love for good music is the main reason for our continued support," states Pomfrey.

For the second year in a row, POMCO Group has brought pharmacy benefit manager partner Medco on as a sponsor, giving Jazz in the City the opportunity to produce four concerts as opposed to three. "Last year the strain of the economy made it difficult for us to secure a fourth major sponsor. POMCO Group's partnership with Medco made it possible for us to continue the tradition of holding a concert in each corner of the city. POMCO Group understands that music is a unifier and they are a true supporter of the community," states Executive Director of CNY Jazz Central Larry Luttinger.

This year's series is dedicated to the memory of the creator of the Harlem Jazzmobile in 1964, visionary jazz musician, organizer and TV commentator Dr. Billy Taylor. "The Jazzmobile was the very first mobile urban jazz concert series in the world, and our series is fashioned after it," states Luttinger, "we need to recognize Dr. Taylor's legacy as a musician, composer, social activist, ambassador for the arts and TV commentator by using the power of America's art form to transform and unify urban communities in his name. With the help of our loyal sponsors, we will continue to make this happen each year for Syracuse."

Jazz in the City concerts are free and open to the public. This year's artists include:

- Rev. Blessed Sikhosa and the "Voices of Africa"
- Syracuse Gospel Music Workshop of America
- The BlackLites
- Marion Meadows
- Salsa Son Timba
- Four80East with special guest Marcus Anderson

POMCO Group invites the community to the third concert held in its auxiliary parking lot behind the Eastwood Walgreens on August 11th at 7:00 p.m. For more information on POMCO Group and its support of Jazz in the City please contact Eboni Britt at 315.432.9171 x4139.
